Yes, you CAN run VPC2007SP1 on Windows 7

I've just upgraded my development machine from Vista to Windows 7. One app that I rely on is Virtual PC because I have a lot of different environments set up to test various things. Microsoft's VPC pages indicate that you must use the Windows 7 version of VPC on Windows 7, but that it won't run if you don't have hardware virtualization. (There is guidance on the site to help you learn whether or not you have hardware virtualization.) My 1 year old PC does not have that capability. The VPC pages also indicate that you can still run VPC2007 on XP and Vista, but the info says nothing about running it on Windows 7. I got a bit nervous thinking that I was left without an option. I tried opening VPC2007 SP1 on the upgraded machine and got some messages about networking issues. A bit more nervous. Then I found the Virtual PC Guys' blog post showing proof that he could run VPC2007 on Win 7 hosting another Win7 environment. In the post was this important clue: So I uninstalled an reinstalled VPC2007 SP1. I tested an existing Vista VPC which worked and then an existing Windows 7 VPC which also worked. Phew. This is only part of the Windows 7 VPC issue. The other part is Windows XP Mode which allows you to run older applications that are not compatible with Win7 (and weren't with Vista either). Since I was upgrading from Vista and not XP, this is not a concern for me but for this feature, I'm guessing that you do, indeed, need |
