Measuring the Firehose

As developers, we have to contend with a dizzying array of new innovations coming from Microsoft all of the time.

In a recent blog post, S. Somasegar, aka Soma, who heads up the Developer Division at Microsoft, lists all of the developer tools that have been delivered since Visual Studio 2008 was released.

I'd recommend that you find a comfortable chair before beginning to read this list. It's really quite astonishing.

He groups them into sections which I'll list and then highlight a few of the technologies in each section.

Libraries, Tools & Tooling: Such as VB Powerpacks, MEF (Managed Extensiblity Framework), DataDude Power Tools and the Visual Studio Tools for Azure

Silverlight & WPF Includes things like the Silverlight Control Pack, Silverlight Toolkit and WPF Toolkit

ASP.NET: Top of this list is ASP.NET MVC, of course, ASP.NET Dynamic Data and the preview of ASP.NET AJAX 4.0.

Languages: DLR in MVC, JQuery, Iron Python* and Visual C++ 2008 Feature Pack.

CLR: For the hard-core geeks, Interop support and security enhancements.

Guidance: Composite App Guidance for WPF and Silverlight (this time with VB samples too!), Web Client Software Factory, Smart Client Software Factory

For the full list with details and links to all of the technologies, visit Soma's detailed blog post: Delivering ongoing value.

I bet that took him quite a bit of time to compile and write, but it's something that he and the whole Developer Division can take great pride in.

One thing that didn't make his list because it happened today which is that a new CTP was released for .NET Services. I caught that on Clemens Vaster's blog and you can learn more about it at the .NET Services Developer Center.

*Check out Michael Foord and Christian Moorhead's new Iron Python in Action. It's at the printer and will be shipping very soon! Michael is one deeply knowledgable IronPython guy and I know the book will be awesome.
